Summer home maintenance checklist

It’s that time again! Break out the sunblock and sprinklers. Gear up your A/C and put some popsicles in the freezer. Summer is just around the corner! For homeowners, it’s time to start on your summer checklist to keep your home in tip top condition and make sure it looks beautiful all year round.

Luckily, we have complied a list to make it easy for you!

What should be on your Summer checklist?

1. Get your cooling system ready

We all know how HOT last summer was! In fact, there was even an A/C shortage because so many homes were having it installed. Regular maintenance is a great way to extend the life of your air conditioner. It’s a good idea to get your A/C serviced before the start of each summer season. Let’s face it – there’s nothing worse than being stuck without air conditioning in the summer heat.

2. Inspect & clean your ceiling fans

Did you know you can change your ceiling fans direction? If you set your fans to spin counterclockwise, it’ll push the air straight down and keep your home nice and cool. It’s also a good time to make sure your fans are clean and dust free since you will be using them lots! Tip: Attach a dryer sheet to a paint roller so you can reach easily and dust away.

3. Wash siding & windows, & screens

The exterior of your home can build up a lot of dirt between summer seasons. Now that the weather is warmer, it’s a great time to wash down your windows, wash or replace your screens, and wipe down your siding. Doing this annually will keep your home’s curb appeal looking it’s absolute best! And if you’d prefer the help of a professional, we have some great Prōs here.

4. Repair and repaint any chipped, cracking or faded exterior paint

The colder months can be hard on the exterior of your home. Fixing up any chipped or faded paint on an annual basis will keep things looking fresh and extend the time between needing a full repaint of your home.

5. Replace air filters

To keep your home’s air circulation fresh and clean, it’s a good idea to change filters seasonally. Here’s your summer reminder to get that done!

6. Inspect outdoor equipment

From BBQs to trampolines, it’s a great idea to inspect, test, and clean any outdoor equipment before regular summer use.

7. Refill cracks on cement walkway or driveway

Cracks may occur due to the expansion and contraction of water with freezing and thawing temperatures during the winter months. Doing annual fills will help prevent keep the paved areas of your property safe, functional, and looking great.

8. Spruce up your landscaping

Trim your trees, add some colour to your garden, and tend to your lawn. Landscaping can make such a huge impact on the appearance and curb appeal of your home! Our Prō Marketplace has lots of vetted, local, highly recommended Prōs who can help you keep on top of landscaping. Browse them here

9. Check exterior vents for any blockages

Proper ventilation is important inside and outside of your home. Do a quick walk around of the exterior of your home to confirm that your vents and soffits are not blocked by leaves, branches or nests.

10. Do a test of your smoke detectors and your carbon monoxide detectors

As we recommend every season, give your home detection systems a quick test to make sure everything is operating as it should be. Keeping on top of the safety of your home could make all the difference in an emergency situation.
